4th International Summer School on Science-Based Formulations

Advancing the future of formulation through collaboration, innovation, and expert-led learning.
Bari, 15–17 September 2025

Formulation is at the heart of so much of product development. Here academia and industry come together to give us the best of formulation science – using expert tutorials to stimulate lively debate and mutual learning.

The 4th International Summer School on Science-Based Formulations took place in Bari, from the 15th to the 17th of September 2025. The School was organized by the Department of Chemistry of the University of Bari “Aldo Moro” and the Consorzio Interuniversitario per lo sviluppo dei Sistemi a Grande Interfase (CSGI).

Topics covered
  • Formulation Science: challenges, trends and paradigm shifts
  • Microemulsion microstructures
  • 3D printing of solid pharmaceutical formulations
  • Formulations for women’s health: challenges and opportunities
  • Intellectual property in formulation science
  • Formulator’s guide to adhesion science
  • Tribology for formulation
  • Rheology primer for formulators
  • Viscosifiers based on polymers and surfactants
  • Designing stable formulations using zeta potential
  • Practical guidelines to determine the optimum formulation
  • Eco-sustainable functional formulations: synergistic strategies
  • Basics of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for detergent formulations
  • Tailoring emulsion stability with organised thin films
  • Formulation science as an enabler of polymer re-use
  • Smart components for smart industrial formulations
Previous editions
  • 1st Edition (2022): Bari, Italy
  • 2nd Edition (2023): Fater Business Campus, Pescara, Italy
  • 3rd Edition (2024): University of Florence, Florence, Italy

The number of participants has been limited to 50 in the first 2 editions, while it was increased to a maximum of 100 participants for the 3rd and 4th Edition.

Who is it for

Formulation science sits at the intersection of chemistry, physics, materials science, chemical engineering, and pharmaceutical/food technologies. Although it has limited space in university curricula, it is critically important for industry.

The School welcomes PhD students, postdocs, and researchers from academia and industry. It offers expert lectures, opportunities to broaden knowledge, and forums to present and discuss ongoing research.
