CNR President Maria Chiara Carrozza visits ISIS Neutron and Muon Source

The visit of CNR President Prof. Maria Chiara Carrozza marked a new chapter in the Italy–UK collaboration at ISIS, highlighting shared achievements and future research ambitions.

On 24 February 2022, ISIS welcomed Prof. Maria Chiara Carrozza, President of Italy’s National Research Council (CNR), highlighting one of the facility’s longest and most productive international collaborations.

The collaboration between CNR and ISIS spans many years of research and instrument development across a broad range of disciplines. The most recent cooperation agreement was signed in autumn 2021 and includes the ISIS@MACH partnership, a new research infrastructure based in the Lazio region. A follow-on proposal aims to extend access with a focus on SMEs, leveraging the potential of neutron techniques to support post-COVID recovery.

Looking ahead, ISIS is developing a new instrument programme, Endeavour, and has long term plans for a new facility, ISIS-II. Italy’s continued partnership will be crucial, building on the significant scientific and technical contributions achieved to date.

During her UK visit on 25 February, Prof. Carrozza delivered a presentation at the Italian Embassy in London to members of the academic and scientific community. She outlined opportunities and challenges under the Horizon Europe framework and Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, and described CNR’s reformed structure designed to meet current research needs, retain talent, and strengthen international collaborations. The event concluded with a Q&A session following opening remarks by Minister Alessandro Motta and an introduction by Scientific Attaché Prof. Roberto Buizza.
